Two people, including a suspect, are hospitalized after an armed carjacking ended in a multi-vehicle crash in Middleburg Saturday evening, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
Derrick Dunham, 31, is being charged with carjacking while carrying a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, cocaine possession, resisting an officer without violence, kidnapping and fleeing and eluding a police officer.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. when Dunham, reportedly forced a driver at gunpoint to move to the passenger side of the vehicle in the 1000 block of Blanding Boulevard, police said.
The suspect then took control of the vehicle and sped off southbound on Blanding Boulevard with the victim still in the passenger seat, deputies said. A nearby business saw the carjacking and alerted the Sheriff's Office, who responded in less than a minute, according to deputies.
While fleeing the scene, the suspected carjacker side-swiped three other vehicles before crashing the stolen car in the 1800 block of Blanding Boulevard at Branan Field Road, the Sheriff's Office said.
Both the suspect and victim were taken in unknown condition to a local hospital. No one else was hurt in the crash, including the occupants of the three other damaged vehicles.
Deputies said the suspect is in custody and his gun has been confiscated. The identities of the victim and suspect have not yet been released.
