The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office recovered a handgun on campus while helping school personnel and arrested a student in the process, a news release said Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Eastside High School.

School personnel were investigating the smell of marijuana coming from a restroom and brought two students to the deans’ office. While searching one of the student’s backpacks, personnel found a revolver inside, the news release said.

A brief physical struggle ensued and a 17-year-old boy was placed under arrest for possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a firearm by a delinquent, according to the news release.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
