A 6-year-old boy was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead Thursday afternoon after playing with his 9-year-old sibling at the Huguenot Memorial Park beach.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the younger child was playing at the beach with his older sibling when the older sibling notified their parents that their brother appeared to be in distress.

9-1-1 was called around 4:30 p.m. and the boy was transported to UF Health Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say it is unclear what caused the child's death, but all indications point to a drowning accident. Detectives are still conducting interviews with family members.

Both parents were present at the scene when the incident occurred.

The family of the victim is from Georgia and was visiting family and friends in the area, according to JSO.
