Proposed Capital Improvement Plan in Jacksonville worth half-a-billion dollars

The CIP is money that would be used to improve the city of Jacksonville. That includes: parks, roads and public buildings.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Improving public safety, expanding the city's parks, highlighting entertainment and arts are at the top of Mayor Lenny Curry's list.

His administration outlined his proposed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).

Thursday was the last day Curry's budget review committee checked the numbers for its CIP. The first draft is headed to the mayor's desk for possible amendments.

The mayor has two weeks to go over the half-a-billion proposed plan.

The CIP is money that would be used to improve the city of Jacksonville. That includes: parks, roads and public buildings. This plan for the next five fiscal years consists of 352 projects.

Brian Hughes, the city's Chief Administrative Officer, said each project is funded by tax dollars.

"If history is precedent, then you'll see city council with a favorable point of view with our budgets," Hughes said. "Infrastructure, the parks, libraries, fire station. All of the facilities and the stuff that makes the city - the city."

The proposed plan includes: replacing the Duval County Jail for $244 Million. It's listed as "3,000 Bed Pretrial Detention Facility/Short Term Holding (replace existing facility)."

Sixty-million would go towards the Lot R stadium performance center. Councilman Matt Carlucci told First Coast News it was an agreement between the city and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Three fire stations for a collective total of $27 million and $500,000 to remove a confederate monument.

The mayor is scheduled to announce his final city budget on July 21. The city council would then have to approve it.
