The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says that sometimes imitation can be flattery, but this time they're unimpressed.

Deputies are warning residents about a scam where people are calling and impersonating law enforcement officers. They say that people are receiving phone calls where the individual will ask to speak about resolving an important matter with the court. Deputies say this is a scam.

The agency believes that criminals are attempting to scare the recipient of the call in an attempt to get financial and personal information.

Deputies say there are ways to check if the sheriff's office has indeed contacted you.

  • First, you can call their non-emergency number at 386-329-0800.
  • Second, they will not ask you for financial information over the phone.

If you are wanted by law enforcement, the Sheriff's Office says that they will find you. They will not make a phone call.
