Arlington ministry bails out moms in time for Mother's Day

Legacy Ministries provided a bailout for moms in jail for non-violent offenses.

This Mother’s Day, an Arlington church gave some mothers a second chance and a fresh start.

Legacy Ministries provided a bailout for moms in jail for non-violent offenses and spent the last few days pampering the women.

Kelly Ford, one of those women, joined the Mother’s Day Service at Legacy Ministries.

This weekend leaves Kelly Ford, a mother of three boys, feeling refreshed and thankful for God after one of her lowest moments.

“He sent an angel in the middle of the night in jail saying, ‘My child, I am here,"' Ford said, "'I got you, here’s a new family that can help you out.'"

Her new family at Legacy Ministries was able to bail her out days after she was arrested.

Legacy Ministries’ first time doing a bailout for mothers was a success, according to Lady Lisa Washington. She offered the women a day of beauty -- including hair and nail services -- along with a mother-daughter luncheon including a fashion show.

Washington’s daughter, who is an attorney, interviewed inmates from the Duval County Jail.

Washington says Ford was a perfect candidate.

“We wanted people that wanted a second chance to come out and to enjoy this time with their families, and felt they were well deserving of a second chance because, at Legacy, we believe in giving a hand up, not a handout,” Washington said.

A hand up which will help Ford get back on her feet.

The reunion with her mother and her sons was the most important turn to a new chapter in her life.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to see me sober, loving God, and wanting to be the mother they need me to be," Ford said. "It means everything to me because I don’t want to leave this world, and them not be proud of who I am."
