ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Since the start of St. Augustine Fashion Week (STAFW), the non-profit has partnered with fashion academy students at Bartram Trail High School.
Each year, seniors like Carissa Lofgren show off one piece in the fashion show.
“It started as a sketch and then months of work and hand sowing and last-minute details to see our project on a person on the runway is really amazing," Lofgren said.
In the last four years, Lofgren has grown a passion for fashion.
“I started freshmen year and just learned the basics and ever since then we’ve just grown more skills learned how to do buttons learned how to do zippers and now making our own pieces for a fashion show. It’s made me want to study fashion in college," Lofgren said.
For the first year ever STAFW will award one Bartram student with a design scholarship, in hopes of expanding the scholarship program to other schools in the future.
“As a fashion-based nonprofit that’s what we really want to support and other things that are funds support to giving micro-grants for fabric or other design supplies to not just Bartram Trail High School but other schools in the area that aren’t lucky enough to have a fashion academy but they might have a fashion club or fashion organization that we want to get in there and show support as well," STAFW Vice President, Carrie Lacayo-Benton said.
