Building in Island Pointe Apartments in Jacksonville is a 'total loss,' after fire, officials say

Firefighters are still on scene fighting the fire, according to a resident of the complex.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First responders are on the scene of a fire at Island Pointe Apartments at 1000 Island Point Drive  on Jacksonville's Northside.

Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Chief Eric Prosswimmer says the building the fire started in is a "total loss."

According to Prosswimmer, JFRD called JEA at 2:20 p.m., telling them to cut the power due to rising flood level concerns.

By 3:20 p.m., a fire broke out inside and firefighters had to evacuate the building, he said.

JFRD has been battling the fire from below and through the walls, but it has now spread to the roof.

At this point, JFRD is now fighting the fire defensively only -- meaning the goal at this point is to contain the fire until it burns through the building.

The source of the fire is unclear at this time.

Residents are currently waiting outside the building as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has cut off entry to the apartment complex.

There have been no injuries reported so far, according to the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department.

First responders have told First Coast News that even some firefighters have not been allowed to enter.

Power has been shut off to the building.

This is a developing story.
