Whitecaps, wind, rain hit St. Simons

A popular vacation spot is under a Tropical Storm Warning heading into the Labor Day weekend.

Sustained winds were measured at 26 MPH Friday morning at St. Simons Island.  Gusts were reaching 46 MPH, but the National Weather Service says the area should brace for worsening conditions through the morning.

Tropical storm force winds are expected to reach between 58 and 73 MPH on Friday. The NWS rates the threat to life and property as "moderate".

"Now is the time to hide from the wind. Failure to adequately shelter may result in serious injury, or in some cases, loss of life," the NWS warns.

The area is under a Tornado Watch through 8:00 am Friday and a Flood Watch until 11:00 pm.

Glynn County sheriff deputies report no significant damage yet. Patrol cars are making trips around the island picking up debris and working to keep the roads clear.
