CHICAGO, IL -- Folks who stayed up late Sunday night in the Chicago area witnessed a rare light show.
The Northern Lights, or "Aurora Borealis," were visible in the skies over the area.
The phenomenon is caused by charged particles interacting with the earth's magnetic field. The particles emit their extra energy in the form of light.
Northern Lights, which are often seen in the northern regions, have been around since Earth formed an atmosphere.
