JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is on the scene of an accident involving a semi and at least four other vehicles on Interstate 295 northbound.

Lt. Bill Leeper with the FHP said the initial crash happened with a couple of cars around 3:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-295 at the entrance ramp from US-17.

Leeper said a semi crashed into those cars, and then hit some others as well, with a total of 4 to 5 vehicles involved. The semi veered off the interstate and went straight through the guardrail before stopping in the grass.

Emergency crews had to cut the roof off of one of the vehicles to get the driver out. Some of the passengers involved in the wreck were transported to Orange Park Medical Center for treatment, though it's not yet clear how many were injured.

The semi was carrying a load of mail, but did not overturn. Crews at the scene are working to tow it from the side of the road.

Right now, two northbound lanes remain blocked. Traffic is backed up across the Buckman Bridge and all the way to I-95.
