Scooter driver killed in traffic accident on Normandy Blvd.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 64-year-old local man was killed Saturday morning after being thrown from his scooter and then run over by a vehicle.

James Canning was traveling eastbound along Normandy Blvd. at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a Nissan Maxima collided into the rear of his scooter. Canning was thrown from his vehicle and then run over by a third vehicle, according to an eyewitness.

Canning was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The witness told authorities the driver of what is believed to be a brown Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck stopped and then fled the scene of the accident. The driver is believed to be a white male with short hair and a beard.
