One person killed in JTA bus accident

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people were taken to the hospital after a sedan and a JTA bus collided early Thursday morning near the courthouse in downtown. 

According to officials, 73-year-old Alfonso Theodore Glover of the sedan died at the hospital. Traffic homicide is investigating the cause of the crash. 

JTA has released a statement:

JTA is saddened about the loss of life resulting from an early morning accident in downtown Jacksonville involving a JTA bus and an automobile. We extend our sincere sympathies to the automobile driver’s family.

The accident is still under investigation and we are fully cooperating with JSO.

The JTA bus operator suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital this morning. Sylvia Shorts has been a driver with JTA since October 30, 2003.

According to Florida Statute, bus drivers shall not be permitted or required to drive more than 72 hours in any 7-day period. Ms. Shorts has driven 15.34 hours this week. During the week of June 19-25, Ms. Shorts worked 22.11 hours.
