Names released in Saturday's fatal crash

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The names of those killed or injured in two crashes Saturday along Interstate 95 have been released by the Florida Highway Patrol. According to FHP reports:

Barbara Carol Pennington, 50, who was driving a Freight-liner semi tractor/trailer southbound on I-95. She failed to stop for stopped traffic, hitting several vehicles causing a chain reaction of several collisions. Pennington died at the scene.

Nilda Valentine Rivera, 41, was traveling in a 2013 Chevrolet Spark when she was killed as a result of the collisions.

Kristen J. Ruiz, 25, was the driver of a Honda Civic. Ruiz also died Saturday, as well as the 1-year-old toddler who was in the car with Ruiz, Jonathan Jay Ruiz of Jacksonville.

Randolph Anthony Smiroldo, 54, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Joel Vanwingerden, 55, was in a 2001 Buick Century and is reported to have minor injuries. He and Rebecca Vanwingerden were transported to Flagler Hospital.

Jillian Whitsitt Miller, 32, was in a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. She also had minor injuries.

David Andrew Bernard, 36, was driving a Peterbilt semi. He was transported to Flagler Hospital with minor injuries.

The names of several others involved accidents, but reporting no injuries, have also been released.

According to FHP, all the individuals listed above were wearing their seat belt.
