Driver identified in near-fatal Middleburg motorcycle crash

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- FHP is investigating a near-fatal motorcycle crash in Middleburg that happened Wednesday evening.

According to FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan, the male driver of the Yahama motorcycle crossed the center lane on North Dolphin Avenue, drove to the opposite shoulder and overturned just before 6:30 p.m. According to FHP, the driver failed to negotiate a curve near Johns Cemetery Road.

The driver was later identified as Douglas Sheppard, 39, of Middleburg.

No other vehicles were involved.

Sheppard was not wearing a helmet when he was thrown from his bike, according to FHP. He was airlifted to UF Health with life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday night, Sheppard was listed in critical condition.

Charges are pending.
