JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man visiting from Virginia for the Florida vs. Georgia game died in a tragic accident on the Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Farhat with the JSO Homicide Division said police responded to the Courtyard by the Marriott off of I-95 and JTB where an identified male had fell into a retention pond around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.
Police said 31-year-old Ottice Hamer and his friends were partying at the Landing until close. They later went to a Waffle house near their hotel, and then sprinted back to the hotel to get out of the heavy rain.
Police said at this time, it appears Hamer accidentally ran into the pond. Unfortunately, neither the victim nor his friends were able to swim so they called for help.
The man went under the water and was not recovered until JSO divers removed Hamer from the pond.
No additional information has been released at this time.
