JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The number can change daily, but as June wraps up the city has more than 1,900 registered sex offenders.
In the wee hours of last Saturday morning, officers worked neighborhoods and motels looking for 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle who was reported missing. She was found dead later that morning.
Arrested and charged in connection with her death was registered sex offender, Donald Smith.
One area near where the Perrywinkle was abducted is Airport Road that leads to Jacksonville International Airport. Along that road, the Country Hearth Inn rents by the week and has more than a dozen registered sex offenders living there according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Management says it informs guests that registered sex offenders are renting rooms.
"Yes we inform them first," said manager Neha Naik who handled questions about what guests are told when they go to the front desk to inquire about a room.
Naik said the property which offers rooms for $189 a week has nine security cameras and someone who handles night time security.
Within a mile radius of the airport according to FDLE there are 22 registered sex offenders with a majority staying in the Country Hearth Inn.
