ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- A coloring assignment that involved course work for second graders learning about slavery and lynching is still being reviewed by Duval County Public Schools.

The assignment was given at Atlantic Beach Elementary School during Black History month.

Parent, James Hill, raised a red flag when he reviewed his son's homework and contacted the school with concerns.

"An image of a murder scene which we thought was highly inappropriate," said Hill, whose concerns prompted an investigation.

Duval County School spokesperson Marsha Oliver said the district will not comment on its probe until it's finished. She said the investigation is near completion.

Reverend R. L. Gundy, an active member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said he doesn't believe the teacher acted in malice.

Gundy said cultural sensitivity training might be needed, noting it was in place years ago for school students and teachers.

"I think we should look at this trying to take what is a negative and turn into a positive," said Gundy.
