JACKSONVILLE, FL --  The city of Jacksonville is one step closer to make an international splash in swimming.

Tuesday Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown announced Jacksonville is one of six cities that placed a bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Swimming Trials.

Mayor Brown says landing the event would bring about 200,000 tourists to the city which could equal about 23 million dollars in revenue.

If the city wins the bidding the swimming trials would be held at Veterans Memorial Arena where a temporary pool would be built inside the arena.

The five other cities bidding for the 2016 U.S. Summer Olympic Swimming Trials are Omaha, San Antonio, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Greensboro, North Carolina.

A decision is expected to be made by April or May.
