LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- There will be extra deputies on duty at a Lake County high school Monday.
The beefed up security is in response to a Facebook threat that officials said threatens Lake Minneola High School.
This
comes as school officials across the country are taking a closer look
at their security procedures following the elementary school massacre in
Connecticut on Friday.
Parents of students at the school received a phone call warning of the threat that another parent saw on Facebook.
"Please
be assured every effort is being made to ensure a safe learning
environment for our Hawk family," said the phone message. "We are
looking forward to a normal successful week on the hill."
Officials
said the threat warned something could happen on Friday, but they have
not been able to track down the origin of it and have not seen the
actual posting.
The number of deputies is expected to be increased as a precaution.
School leaders in Volusia and Flagler counties have also beefed up security in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting deaths.
In
Volusia County, they have upped their security to level 2 this week
which includes locking entrance doors on area campuses. The sheriff's
department has added patrols at area schools and counselors are
available to children who are having a hard time coping.
In
Flagler County, resource officers are already in the middle and high
schools, but the sheriff's department will have a deputy in every
elementary school as well this week.
The superintendent tells WESH 2 that they have received a lot of calls
from worried parents and many chose to drive children to school Monday.
Both districts are checking on absenteeism in the wake of the shootings.
