St. Johns County, Fla. -- Experts in St. Johns County say the sea turtle nesting season went swimmingly!
The final numbers are in for the sea turtle nesting season in the county and a total of 698 nests were documented. That's 654 loggerheads, 33 greens and 11 leatherbacks.
That is up from 2011, but doesn't beat the record of 885 set in 2010.
St. Johns County estimates around 39,849 sea turtles hatched this year, but only 1 in 1,000 will survive 20 years to come back to the area to nest.
