JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- JAXPORT's board voted Wednesday morning to turn over operation of the St. Johns River Ferry to the St. Johns River Ferry Committee.

The deal, which was approved by a vote of 7-0, will go into effect September 30.

The land that houses the administrative offices for the ferry will be leased to Hornblower for a year. The land was obtained from the City of Jacksonville.

The committee had wanted it to be leased to them for two years, but JAXPORT is leasing it to Hornblower instead.

JAXPORT will provide expertise and staff to the committee so the transition goes smoothly.

Additionally, JAXPORT will give them $200,000 to operate the service. JAXPORT will also reimburse up to $35,000 of redeemed prepaid coupons that are set to expire September 30, 2012.

JAXPORT is also working on a design to fix the ferry slips. These would also be a donation to the St. Johns River Ferry Committee.
