PALM BAY, Fla. -- A suspect who shot and wounded a Palm Bay police officer is in custody after a six hour standoff Saturday according to a press release sent by Yvonne Martinez, a public information coordinator, from the Palm Bay Police Department.
Mark Clark, 55, was arrested at his home and is facing two charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault.
On Saturday evening officers James Bearden and Shane Carroll went to Clark's home to arrest him for an aggravated assault, which police said occurred on Friday, involving his family members. When officers arrived at Clark's home there was a brief conversation before he opened fire on two officers, according to the release.
Bearden was wounded in the left side of his jaw and Carroll also sustained an injury to his elbow when he fell as he was returning fire. Bearden was eventually treated and released from the hospital.
Clark then barricaded himself in the house. He was believed to be heavily armed. SWAT teams from Palm Bay and Brevard County responded along with crisis negotiators. Negotiators communicated with the Clark for several hours until he finally agreed to surrender. He was uninjured at the time of his arrest.
Martinez said the investigation is ongoing.
