JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Congestion can be a serious issue on the roadways of the First Coast. The idea behind State Road 9B is to help lighten the congestion between St. Johns and Duval Counties.

Phase 1 is done and open connecting I-295 near Baymeadows to US-1. Phase 2 is in the works. It will connect US-1 to I-95. Now Phase 3 just got the green light and it has a big price tag.

"Construction costs are expected to be at $100 million, but when you include right of way and design in that, it is projected to be $125 million," said Laurie Sanderson with FDOT.

Phase 3 will help connect I-95 to St. Johns Parkway.

"People coming up from Race Track Road will benefit from SR-9B extending to that area," explained Sanderson.

Commuters will have to endure a few more years of construction barrels. The second phase is expected to be done in 2016, but the third phase may begin construction in 2015.

"So we could start the third phase before the second phase is fully completed," told Sanderson.

Once it is done though, SR-9B should help alleviate some of the congestion and help drivers have a faster way getting from Point A to Point B.
