CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman driving the wrong way on U.S. 17 caused a crash that sent her and two others to the hospital with serious injuries, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night, after Vickie Lou Matthews, 74, was driving northbound in the highway's southbound lanes.

Matthews' Volkswagen Beetle collided with a Honda Civic, driven by 54-year-old Kevin Dale Douylliez, near the intersection with County Road 209. At the time of the accident, Douylliez was heading southbound on US-17 in the right travel lane, troopers say.

After the collision, Douylliez's Honda ran off the road and hit a guardrail, according to the FHP report.

Matthews' Volkswagen ended up in the left travel lane facing southbound.

Matthews' passenger, 84-year-old Encarnacion Nava Hodges of Jacksonville, along with Douylliez and Matthews, were taken to Orange Park Medical Center for treatment.

Troopers reported that both drivers and the passenger were wearing their seatbelts at the time of impact.

Matthews was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road.
