Cross-country sweep puts Russia over top for medal count
SOCHI — With a Russian sweep of the men's 50-kilometer cross-country race Sunday, the host nation secured the top spot in the medals race with 32 overall and 12 golds. The U.S. should finish in second with 27 medals and nine golds, with another possible medal in today's four-man bobsled race. Norway is in third with 26 overall medals and 11 golds.
In the final event before closing ceremony, Canada will meet Sweden in the men's hockey gold medal game.
Four years ago, Russia won only 15 medals and just three golds, its worst ever performance. A shake-up of the team's federation followed and the host nation vowed to win the overall title. On the final day, they did just that.
