JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The mother of Blake Bortles says the Jaguars have a first rate player and person in their first round draft pick.
Suzy Bortles, along with her husband, accompanied their son to EverBank Field on Friday after flying in from New York City where Blake was the third player selected in the NFL draft on Thursday night.
"He's a fighter, competitor that's what got him here," said Bortles outside the stadium as her son prepared for a noon news conference with the team.
"He is just excited to meet his teammates and just to get started with everything," said the proud mother who sees it as a plus living two hours away from Jacksonville which will make it easier to see her son play.
The Bortles's live outside of Orlando where Blake played high school football and later became the quarterback of the University of Central Florida Knights.
Jags owner Shad Kahn says Bortles has been on the team's radar for a long time.
"He was absolutely the player for us, total agreement on him and already a plan for him to be successful for the Jaguars," said Kahn after taping a television spot for Visit Jacksonville outside the stadium.
For Suzy Bortles her son's big day was summed up this way, "We are just really proud of him and excited for him to get started."
