TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Medical marijuana is not legal in Florida.
But, that's not stopping people from getting on board with it now that the drug has the possibility of becoming legal in the state.
More than two dozen companies have registered with names suggesting they will sell the drug.
Most of them were in the south and central Florida areas, but around two have registered in Jacksonville, according to state records.
Medical marijuana still has a long path ahead. State lawmakers are debating whether to legalize it during session and there's a referendum on the ballet for the November elections that would let voters choose.
"If we have businesses that are looking to come to Florida, we need to make sure we have the proper framework in place to ensure the public's safety, but also not hamper any of the business free market that would take place," said Rep. Alan Williams, D - Tallahassee.
The information for the businesses registered is listed on the Florida Department of State website sunbiz.org.
