TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Some of Florida's graduate students closed their books and picked up signs in protest of fees they have to pay each semester.

The Florida State University chapter of the United Faculty of Florida rallied on the steps of the Historic Old Capitol Monday. They wanted to bring attention to fees graduate assistants must pay at Florida universities.

They say all public institutions, except FAMU, require GA's to pay to work.

The fee can be up to more than $900 a semester.

"I'm forced to pay these upfront before I've even gotten a paycheck. So, it affects me long term. I take out a student loan every semester just to pay for my fees," said Kerr Ballenger with the FSU United Faculty of Florida.

Their goal is to have the fees waived by the fall of this year.
