ATLANTA -- Authorities say a police officer shot a man holding a large knife at Woodruff Park Tuesday afternoon.

According to Atlanta Police Lt. Paul Guerrucci, officers were investigating reports of a man drinking in the park. The man tried to flee from officers, Guerrucci said. While he was fleeing, the man allegedly pulled a 14-inch butcher knife out and attacked a Georgia State University police officer, who was in plain clothes. The GSU officer was stabbed in the back.

An Atlanta police officer then shot the man once in the leg.

The suspect was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and taken into surgery, Guerrucci said.

The GSU officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for stab wounds.
