BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The mother of a teenager already convicted of murder will serve 10 years in prison for trying to dispose of the murder weapon.
Karimah Elkins, 37, was convicted of evidence tampering. She tossed the weapon used by her son, DeMarquise Elkins, in a lake.
Elkins was convicted of killing 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. He has been sentenced to life in prison.
The other teen charged with murder, Dominique Lang, has yet to be tried. His attorney asked the court for Lang to be evaluated, one step in the process for moving his case to juvenile court. The motion was granted.
Sherry West, the mother of the infant who was murdered, is not on board with juvenile court.
"I really feel that he was there and he was as big a threat to me and my baby as the shooter," said West following Tuesday's sentencing hearing for Karimah Elkins.
