ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found Wednesday at Guana River State Park in South Ponte Vedra.

According to SJSO, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission discovered remains on the east side of State Road A1A during a scheduled controlled burn Wednesday afternoon.

The remains were burned during the course of the controlled burn, according to SJSO Sgt. Catherine Payne.

SJSO robbery and homicide detectives are currently investigating the area. Detectives suspect the remains have been there for a while.

"Well it's very scary because people who live in Ponte Vedra sort of have a false sense of security," said long time Ponte Vedra resident Lynn Medis

Locals like Medis are aware of past incidents at the park, like in 2002 when April Barber was shot and killed while on the beach. Her husband, Justin Barber, was charged and convicted for her death in 2006, but maintained throughout the trial that they were attacked on the beach.

Then in 2007, 31-year-old Clark McWhorter was found on the roadway on Coastal Highway in Guana River State Park with a gunshot wound. His case was unsolved till 2012 when investigators were led to Phillip Carl Pomper who allegedly admitted to being involved in McWhorter's death and that the murder was completely random.

The area is one where runners and bikers frequent, like Alex Bailey who says he just rode his bike there on Sunday.

"I haven't felt unsafe there, but I will certainly watch around there my surroundings when I'm out there next time," said Bailey.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says there is no identification on the body yet and that it could take weeks. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-824-8304.
