JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida National Guard is in danger of losing soldiers. That's because of a proposal as part of the Budget Control Act.

According to the Florida National Guard, 10%, or 1,000 soldiers would be gone. Also, 4 helicopters could move.

Michael Horne spent a year with the Guard. He says the proposed cuts are a big step backward.

"That'd be a big mistake," he said.

The National Guard is frequently called to help with disasters like hurricanes and flooding. They played a big part in Georgia when a winter storm left people stranded for hours. Horne says the cuts wouldn't just impact Florida.

"If you cut 1,000 out of Florida, it impacts any of the states surrounding us that need help at any point in time," Horne said.

According to the Florida Guard, if the cuts happen, they'll be made in the 2015 Fiscal year.
