SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A duckling is recovering after being rescued by a Sarasota police officer. The Sarasota Herald-Tribunereports Officer Juan Sanchez found the little duck Thursday morning near an intersection.

It was covered in muck and was struggling to breathe.

The officer cleaned the duck and opened its airway. He then took it to Save Our Seabirds on Longboat Key for treatment.

The staff named the duck Freddy and say he is doing well. It's not the first time a Sarasota officer has been in the news for saving a struggling creature.

The newspaper says Officer Derek Conley rescued some 100 disoriented sea turtle hatchlings last August on Lido Key.
