A woman is lucky to be alive after a car crashes through a CVS, and she has her sweet tooth to thank.
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- It was a narrow miss at a CVS in Winter Haven after an 84-year-old woman slammed her car through the front doors of the pharmacy, almost hitting a shopper head-on.
It happened in a snap, said Arienne Watkins. The 80-year-old was walking through the CVS on State Road 540 after a morning of errands on Wednesday.
"I didn't know what I was gonna get, but I knew it would be sweet."
That's when a Chevy Impala driven by Margaret Underwood shot through the front doors, tearing through everything in its path. It stopped not five feet from Watkins, and the force of it knocked her to the floor.
"I didn't think it was coming in until I was on the floor," she said.
Luckily the 80-year-old woman is tough.
"God made me that way," she said.
Watkins only came away with a few bumps and bruises on her legs, but Winter Haven police said things could have been much worse.
"It's a miracle she did not get injured any more than she was," said Public Information Officer Jamie Brown. "That king-sized Hershey Chocolate with Almonds saved her life."
Watkins watched surveillance video of the crash in disbelief.
"Yeah, if I had been there, I would have been a mess."
And she gave thanks.
"It'll be alright, because God was with all of us."
As a diabetic, Watkins says she probably shouldn't have been reaching for the bar of chocolate, but her sweet tooth just may have saved her life.
