The On Your Side team gets answers for a couple who says their mail is being stolen.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville couple claims their mail is being stolen. So, they called the On Your Side team for help.

Michael and his wife, Marissa, were married January 18. Their second baby girl is due soon.

"A little nervous but excited at the same time," Michael said.

Around the second week of February, they noticed their mail start to thin out at the home they recently moved into.

"I thought it was just maybe they had some issues getting the address changed," Michael said.

Then he said the mail stopped coming. Not even junk mail. For about a month.

"Around the middle of the night, I go out there and there's a car at my mailbox," Michael said. "They see me and they take off speedily. On two different occasions, I've also seen that same car there. That's when I suspected it of being stolen."

Michael is a veteran and said they never got their marriage certificate by mail. They had to go downtown to get a copy.

Important tax documents are still missing.

His wife said a relative mailed at least $200 in gift cards, just for the unborn baby.

The newlyweds haven't gotten those either.

He believes a former postal employee may be to blame.

"It's sad that someone that knows what can happen if they get caught for messing with mail is continuing to do so," Michael said.

The United States Postal Service website said willful damage to mailboxes or theft of mail are federal crimes punishable by a fine, imprisonment or both.

Michael's family has put a hold on their mail and said they contacted the USPS.

He said they're waiting to hear back again.

FCN contacted the USPS on Wednesday morning.

Special agent Kenny Smith responded that afternoon saying:

"The Office of Inspector General, U.S. Postal Service, just became aware of Ms. Lewis' complaint this morning and are in the process of evaluating that information. As such, we have no other information to provide at this time."

"Thank you, again, so much," Michael said.

Michael said he is going to get a post office box at his local postal branch to try to cut down on the risk of theft.

Here is some #YouFirst advice directly from the website of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on what steps to take to protect your mail:

1) Use the letter slots at your post office to mail letters, or give them to a letter carrier.

2) Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. Don't leave it in your mailbox overnight.

3) Don't send cash in the mail.

4) Ask your bank for "secure" checks that can't be altered.

5) Tell your post office when you'll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.
