COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Columbia County Sheriff's Office on Friday warned residents of a phone scam in which callers purport to be from Florida Power and Light.

The way the scam works, according to a release from CCSO Public Information Officer Murray Smith, is that the caller claims to be an FPL employee and tells the victim that their bill is past due and that they must use a prepaid credit card to pay the balance.

FPL tells CCSO that live agents do not contact customers this way. They offer the following advice to its customers in the event this occurs:

1. Notify their local law enforcement agency immediately.

2. Contact FPL at the number listed at the bottom of their FPL bill or online at FPL.com/contact us

3. Report it to either the Florida Department of Agriculture or Consumer Services (FDACS) immediately (www.800helpfla.com or 1-800-435-7352) or the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force (stopfraud.gov).
