ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – A woman who was stabbed over 20 times is still in serious condition Thursday afternoon.
Justyn Patrick Courson, 24, allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend who had returned to the home they once shared in the 2100 block of Fairway Villas Lane to collect her belongings, according to a police report form the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Courson allegedly became enraged while the victim was inside the apartment and was upset over the relationship ending. He grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim in excess of 20 times, the report detailed.
The victim was able to flee and get to a neighbor who called 911. The victim was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville in serious condition.
Courson barricaded himself inside the home for two hours. "We had a hostage negotiator that opened lines of communication with him and we were able to get him out," said Commander Tiffany Layson, Atlantic Beach Police.
Courson was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville after cutting his own throat and was absentee booked into the Duval County Jail.
Many residents in the neighborhood were not able to leave their homes and others could not get back in for hours.
"I've been out here for about an hour and a half, I've got groceries and they won't let me in, they've let other people and I live pass the crime scene," said Frank Left, a resident in the neighborhood.
Jodi Harris says her mother lives close to the suspect and was on the phone with her for hours while police tried to negotiate with him.
"It's so close to home to where my sister and them stay and the kids are always outside playing so you never know what's going to happen," said Harris.
