JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department extinguished a fire Friday night at the popular oldies nightclub 57 Heaven on Atlantic Boulevard.

About 30 people were inside the club when the fire started and all were able to get out safely, according to Fire Chief Marty Senterfitt.

Owner Darryl Leaks was inside at the time of the fire as well. He said he smelled a slight smell, then went outside and saw the flames on the roof.

Once he realized that the blaze was too much for he and the staff to contain, Leaks said they immediately focused on getting everyone out of the club.

"We did. We got them all out. Everything was fine," Leaks said.

Atlantic Boulevard was closed in both directions between Acme Street and South Bowlan Street while firefighters worked for 30 to 45 minutes to put out the blaze.

Senterfitt said the building does not appear to be a total loss, but it will be easier to determine that during the day. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Bartender Johnny Hayes was also inside at the time the fire broke out and said the Arlington institution will rise from the ashes.

"We're going to rebuild and we're going to reopen," Hayes said. "Hope everybody comes back when we reopen."
