JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One man is in custody after a lengthy standoff with police at a motel on the city's west side.

Sgt. J.D. Warren with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the situation started around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Diamond Inn in the 5900 block of Ramona Boulevard.

The suspect, 44-yearold John Morrow, was arguing with motel management over money they said he owed for approximately a week's stay at the property, according to Warren.

Then, Warren said Morrow barricaded himself in a second floor room with a knife before damaging just about everything inside.

"We watched him destroy the room from the outside and we could hear him destroy the room from the inside," Warren explained on scene.

Once Morrow began making threats against himself and against police officers, Warren said the sheriff department's SWAT team was called in to try and diffuse the situation.

Negotiations lasted for several hours before officers eventually raided the room around 1 a.m. and physically removed Morrow from the motel. No one was injured in the altercation.

One wing of the property had to be evacuated, Warren said, but guests were allowed back into their rooms once police cleared the scene.

Warren said Morrow was on probation for a separate vandalism case.

He is expected to be booked into the Duval County Jail on a new felony warrant for vandalism and related charges. It's possible he'll make his first court appearance for the case later in the day Friday.
