CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A 14-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle Friday morning while attempting to cross a street near Oakleaf High School, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told deputies Shnaida Mentor, 14, was walking across Oakleaf Plantation Boulevard towards school around 7 a.m. when she was hit by a man driving a Toyota SUV traveling over the overpass.

Deputies say the accident was a slow speed collision, however, Mentor was tossed approximately 20 feet. She was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with minor injuries.

The collision did not happen in a school zone, CCSO said.

Based on a preliminary investigation by CCSO, the driver was not speeding and will not be issued a citation.
