JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- According to JSO three dead, decaying dogs were found in the yard of a home on the Northside of Jacksonville last month.

In a police report, an animal control officer said he could "smell the odor of a decaying animal."

The suspect, Anthony Porch, is facing a string of charges, including cruelty to animals and improper disposal of an animal.

Porch told First Coast News the animals fought each other, and died overnight.

Nikki Harris is the Division Chief for Jacksonville's Animal Care and Protective Services. She says though her agency doesn't keep a tally on the number of abandoned animals, it's a common problem.

"The officers do find them on a regular basis," she said.

She says pet owners and people who come across sick or dead animals can step up and help, so they're not left out on the street.

"Reach out to your local humane society, reach out to veterinarians, even us at animal control to see if we have the resources that can help you," she said.
