HASTINGS, Fla. -- A 1-year-old drowned in his parents above ground swimming pool Thursday after investigators says he was not seen for ten minutes.
The child was identified as 22 month old Carter Grayson Sherwood. He was rushed to Flagler Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Neighbors of the little boy rushed to his side to administer CPR until paramedics arrived to the home in Flagler Estates.
"Part of you feels like you failed. We did what we could do. We did everything we could do," said Jennifer Petermann who responded to the call for help.
The family friend says she was told the little boy followed siblings out the front door and wandered to the back yard where the ladder to the pool was down.
Petermann says she is not blaming her friend whom she describes as a good mother.
"It was an accident. Unfortunately it seems bad things happen to good people," she said.
The St. John's County Sheriff's office is investigating the drowning.
When St. Johns County Fire-Rescue arrived they began life saving techniques on the child. The child was taken to Flagler Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
At this time, detectives believe this is an apparent drowning; however the investigation is continuing.
