JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of Florida veterans were honored with a special ceremony at the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard in Jacksonville. The majority of those who received medals are airmen with the unit.

Governor Scott has made his way across the state over the past week, awarding veterans with the Governor's Veterans Service Award for their service to the state and country.

It was a special moment for Master Sergeant Shelia Mcglothlin, who has been with the Florida Air National Guard for 22 years.

"It's been the best choice I've made," she said.

A veteran himself, Governor Scott said it's important for everyone to remember the sacrifices these men and women in uniform make.

"We've got to recognize our veterans . Whether it's their service while they are in the service, defending our freedom," he said.

On the front of the medal, there's the seal of the state. On the back of the medal is an inscription that reads 'Honoring Those Who Served', along with the five seals representing the five branches of the military.

Governor Scott said Florida is making great strides in becoming the most military friendly state in the country, most recently with the GI Bill.

"This year we passed the GI Bill, which allows all veterans to get in-state tuition. We are going to make this the best place for veterans," he said.

His tour will wrap up Thursday where he is scheduled to present these medals to veterans in Pensacola and Panama City.
