LAKE CITY, Fla. -- An officer with the Lake City Police Department was fired Monday after she allegedly crashed her vehicle while driving drunk in 2013.
According to a press release from the Lake City Police Department, officer Staci Brownfield crashed her vehicle on November 12, 2013 at the intersection of SE County Club Road and SE Buck Gln in Lake City around 9:30 p.m.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office responded the the crash and requested back-up from FHP after it suspected alcohol was a factor.
Brownfield then failed a field sobriety test and was arrested and formally charged with driving under the influence. After eight hours in jail, she was released on $1,000 bond. No other vehicles were involved and Brownfield was off duty at the time of the crash.
An internal affairs investigation by LCPD found that Brownfield violated department policy and she was terminated by Chief Argatha Gilmore on Monday.
"This is an unfortunate reminder that we are not above the law," said Chief Gilmore. "This officer was found to have violated our department policy by driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. While I am grateful that there were no serious injuries in this crash, we have a firm stance against impaired driving in Lake City, and our officers must set the example."
The criminal proceedings in the case are still ongoing.
