JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A June 18 shooting has evolved into a murder investigation after the 33-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries.

Police are searching for a suspect who fled from a shooting on the Westside in the afternoon of June 18.

Stephen Alphonzo Small, 33, was shot by an unidentified suspect in the Jacksonville Heights neighborhood just after 2 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

After the shooting the suspect fled the scene on foot and K-9 units were dispatched by JSO.

Small, who was shot once, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville. According to JSO, Small died as a result of his injuries on June 20.

An eye witness to the crime is cooperating with investigators, according to JSO.
