JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office blocked traffic on the 3400 block of Thalia Road Sunday evening. Five nearby houses were evacuated.

According to JSO Lt. Jimmy Judge, deputies responded around 6:15 p.m. to reports of a domestic violence suspect beating his girlfriend.

When they arrived, there was no answer at the door.

The girlfriend of the suspect's roommate and two young children left the home safely, according to Lt. Judge.

The suspect and his girlfriend barricaded themselves inside the house. It is unknown if the suspect's girlfriend remains in the house voluntarily or if she's being held hostage.

Lt. Judge said authorities tried contacting the suspect by cell phone and bullhorn. Intelligence suggests there may be weapons inside the house.

Police are requesting an arrest warrant for the suspect.
