ST MARYS, Ga. -- Braxton Sullivan, 15, was walking alongside a four lane highway Saturday night when he was hit by a car. Police say he died at the scene on St. Marys Road near Interstate 95 with his brother was not injured.

Sullivan who recently graduated from middle school lived in a boys home and had a new family waiting to take him in. David and Sue Murrell now only have memories and thoughts of what could have been.

"We had checked him out for the weekend and was going to take him back Monday...and this happened," said the mother who was introduced to Sullivan through her daughter.

The Murrell's say they were in the process of adopting the teen who would have been the seventh child in their family.

"He wanted to do whatever he could for people around him," said David Murrell from the door step of their home in St. Marys.

The driver of the car, Rubin O'Neil Mainor of Jacksonville, told police he was reaching for cell phone to reset it to play music. The noise he heard next was that of a shattered windshield. Mainor called 911 when discovered he had hit the teen. The accident remains under investigation.

Funeral services are set for Friday in St. Marys for Braxton Sullivan.
