DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A child was taken to the hospital Monday after being hit by an SUV on Daytona Beach, WESH is reporting.
The boy, who is about a year and a half old, ran in front of the SUV and was run over.
Leesa Durocher, the driver of the SUV, said she never saw the child.
"I just embraced the mother. I didn't know what to do at that point. It's like a nightmare," Durocher said.
The toddler was between cars and dashed away from his mother, right into the traffic lane.
"I heard something. It just happened so quickly, but I did hear a boom. Next thing you know, the mother is in front of my vehicle, and she's taking the child out in front of my vehicle," said Durocher.
The child was taken to the hospital for bruises and possible back burns from the exhaust, but his injuries are non-life-threatening.
Witnesses say Durocher was driving well under the speed limit.
"My chest hurts because people who know me know that children are my heart, and I'm really upset about this," she said.
