JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- When the wind is screeching outside your windows and cars are backed up trying to leave town, that is not the time to be figuring out what evacuation zone you live in. Especially since the maps were just changed this year. The previous map only accounted for the category of the hurricane which is based on wind speed. The new map factors in wind speed, storm surge and flooding.

"You can see generally the areas impacted are along the coast and by the river, so if you live close to the water it is especially important to know your zone," tells Steve Woodard the Emergency Preparedness Director for Jacksonville.

The red and orange zones A & B respectively will be the first to evacuate prior to a storm.

"Particularly in the northeast portion of the county, there is significant threat associated with a hurricane of any value," tells Woodard.

The good news is the routes are still the same. In the event of an impending tropical storm of hurricane, we at First Coast News along with the city of Jacksonville will let you know which zones are being told to evacuate. So take a minute and look at the new map before hurricane season begins.

The City of Jacksonville's new guide will be available at Winn-Dixie stores and published in The Florida Times-Union in the Sunday, June 1, edition of the newspaper. The guide also will be available at various government buildings and community centers, the American Red Cross, and online at JaxReady.com
